I was thinking about favourite songs, and what they say about a person... For example, Roy Keane's favourite is said to be Bob Dylan's Positively 4th Street. Scroll down and read the lyrics. Here is a snippet:
You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning
It's just Roy all out, isn't it? Not that I even know him!
I was soooo busy analysing Roy, that I nearly fell off my chair when I thought of my own favourite song and what it might mean about ME!! As a teenager, my favourite was The Eagle's "Lying Eyes" and I still love it. I absolutely HATE deceit and lying of any kind.
Do we choose songs because they describe us? Do the lyrics simply resonate with us? Do we like something that agrees with our own point of view? Do we simply choose a snappy tune?
What is YOUR favourite song? Tell us - does it describe a deep part of you?
Positively 4th Street by Bob Dylan
You got a lotta nerve
To say you are my friend
When I was down
You just stood there grinning
You got a lotta nerve
To say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on
The side that's winning
You say I let you down
You know it's not like that
If you're so hurt
Why then don't you show it
You say you lost your faith
But that's not where it's at
You had no faith to lose
And you know it
I know the reason
That you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd
You're in with
Do you take me for such a fool
To think I'd make contact
With the one who tries to hide
What he don't know to begin with
You see me on the street
You always act surprised
You say, "How are you?" "Good luck"
But you don't mean it
When you know as well as me
You'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once
And scream it
No, I do not feel that good
When I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief
Perhaps I'd rob them
And now I know you're dissatisfied
With your position and your place
Don't you understand
It's not my problem
I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is
To see you

I couldn't say any song is definitively my fave - but I love Bob Dylans "Tangled Up In Blue" It is so cinematic, and great time lapse story. And the change in the 6th verse where the narrator goes from detailing his relationship with "she" to living with a "them", really grabs attention, and creates a great scene in your head.
Well, it's Joni Mitchell and either 'A Case of You' or The Last Time I saw Richard. The more recent version of the latter on her orchestral double cd is incredible because her singing and the strings backing her add the weight of all the years since she first wrote it.
Hi John and Conan,
I'll have to look those lyrics up and see if I can decipher anything about ye!
That would have to be Nick Drake's ‘Cello Song
Strange face
With your eyes
So pale and sincere
Underneath you know well
You have nothing to fear
For the dreams that came
To you when so young
Told of a life
Where spring is sprung
You would seem so frail
In the cold of the night
When the armies of emotion
Go out to fight
But while the earth
Sinks to it’s grave
You sail to the sky
On the crest of a wave
So forget this cruel world
Where I belong
I’ll just sit and wait
And sing my song
And if one day you should see me in the crowd
Lend a hand and lift me
To your place in the cloud
That was a hard choice as about 50% of his work could qualify as my favourite.
Just watch and see this new biopic screw it all up.
Hi Dev,
Another song outside of my radar that I must check out. I like the lyrics. Might describe them as a bit depressing like, but I get it.
I'm with Dev. There isn't a bad Nick Drake song. Very fond memories of Nick Drake, a friend in college had a tape, which was a copy of a copy of a copy. We all made our own copies! The sound quality was shite, but the couldn't overshadow the amazing music. Before his music became widely available, I spent years hunting down his albums.
BTW Maureen, depressing maybe, (he did commit suicide, although this is debated as maybe an accidental overdose), but when put to music, incredibly beautiful. Do yourself a favor and buy all three of his albums. You will find that you may decide to disappear from the world for a while while you absorb the music.
Thanks John, I'll HAVE to check him out now.
Interesting factoid. Nick Drake is the only artist to have all of his albums in the Rolling Stone top 500 albums of all time.
