Well, the unthinkable has happened. Fianna Fail have been embraced for another term by the people of Ireland. This means that we'll have 15 years in a row of lies and broken promises. It means that FF will have been in power for most of the last quarter of a century, except for a couple of brief spells here and there!! That's just not healthy.
Why did it happen? Greed? A feeling that they're all the same? A wish to let FF deal with the predicted job losses and general economic slow-down? I think it's because people wanted to vote in their local man ( and it was nearly all men again). I don't understand that argument. Surely, we need an overall Government, overall policy, overall planning?? Not fabulous roads in South Kerry from Jackie-Healy Rae, for example, while the surrounding roads are pitiable!!
We don't quite know yet who will form our brand new, shiny Government, but the Fianna Failers look set to be the bosses! Brian Cowen (Bertie's next in command and "very close, personal friend" - wonder if he ever gave him a dig out?) raged yesterday that he doesn't need anyone to straighten him up or to clean him up (it seems someone from the Green Party said FF needed just that - imagine!).
If FF choose to take a few Independents into their arms, you can be sure they'll strike a hard bargain. Jackie will want more fine roads; Tony will want x,y,z for inner city Dublin, Beverley will want the same for her gaff. People are saying that this crack would be terrible for the country. Let's face the truth though, every TD is an Independent in a way, because they have to satisfy their own local constituents in our local politics-system. Can a country really be run properly like this?

15 years is far too long for one man to be in power. Since he got away with issuing an empty statement about his finances that whole scandal will now evaporate once he begins his next term.
Yes, ghastly prospect... but at least the pee dees got told what the country thinks of them. Let no one forget that their elected TDs, Ms Harney and Noel Grealish, had only 4,663 and 5,806 first preference votes each. If Bertie gives them a leg up, and a Senate backdoor to MacDowell, FF will answer for it at the next election.
Hello M!
At least the 'local' man got the boot ...
ooooooooo haaaaaaaaaapy days!!!

Hi Medbh, Exactly right, and HOW silly to enter Gov with him while he's still under a cloud....
Conan, I wonder if FF will ever answer for ANYTHING - EVER????
Hello J!
You're harsh on the creature!!

They're recruiting an instructional designer - might be right down your alley?
Bah. We elected them. We deserve them.
Jackie Healy Rae is an honest hard working man who is a success and we should be proud to have such a Kerryman in our time. That is silly to talk about raods to nowhere...Jackie is concerned about many topics and it might do you good to educate yourself on those
I'm glad to hear someone defending JHR from the many calumnies perpetrated on his good name. For instance, there was a terrible and untrue rumour circulating to the effect that JHR uses a free travel pass to get the train to the capital but claims the full expense allowance (to which he is entitled) for the distance he has to travel.
Anonymous, I'm neither silly nor uneducated. I AM tooooo stressed out at the moment though to be arguing, so I've removed the roads to nowhere. I was only stating what his own neighbours said to me. Have you seen the main Cork (especially from Macroom) to Killarney road lately for instance? It's shocking, but JHR's roads to and from his own very small village of Kilgarvan are mighty. Fair play to him and all that, but it proves that the local rather than the national mindset rules in Ireland. That was my only point.
Conan, fair play to you for defending Jackie. I've heard a few of those terrible rumours too. Silly, uneducated people are the only ones who would believe them!
Jackie Healy Rae always pays for his ticket to Dublin at Killarney Train Station. He could get a free pass but he does not want it. That is very untrue whomever said that about him as I know 100% that he pays for his tickets. As for the roads well hopefully more roads will be improved now, along with many other things lacking in South Kerry!!
