I bought a few things from 4Homes in Killarney over the weekend. Boring household items, but at good prices - or so I thought...
Turns out that the advertised prices (on the shelves) and the sticker prices (on the items themselves) were not the REAL prices.
They added VAT on at the till!
I thought that was illegal?
False advertising?
Reportable to the consumer watchdog?
I didn't cop it until I got home.
What should I do?
In the meantime, don't get caught out yerselves!!!
P.S. I love you, Wayne, for that beautiful goal tonight! (Yes! Wayne reads this blog... well, he might!!!)

If possible bring them straight back and point out the discrepancy to the manager; if he refuses (which I doubt) to refund then you can report it to the consumer watchdog and be prepared to for a long wait before anything happens.
Report it (but they'll ask why you didn't bring the goods back) if it gives you some satisfaction in that you might spare someone else.
Best to keep your eyes open all the time in this world; a pain I know, but there is always someone out to make a quick buck (or maybe an error; possible) at the expense of others. Y:-) Paddy.
PS: Killarney, it's a long time since I've been there, not that I spent much time there but I did pass through it on the odd occasion. I spent a good deal of time in Kerry though; in Dingle, an equally beautiful place especially when I first went: 1976. It was only starting to flourish as a tourist spot then; wild and beautiful. Things have changed and maybe one day I'll go back for a visit. Sorry I went a bit off track. Best of luck! Y:-) Paddy
Can't remember what it's like in Ireland Mairéad, but over here, only trade stores operate like that. (ie shops whose main business is with other businesses, as opposed to the general public). I don't think regular shops are allowed to do it.
Thanks Paddy and Kav.
Paddy, you're right I should be more watchful. I had actually heard that 4Homes were at this, so I looked closely at the prices. When I got to the till though, I paid by laser card and only got my receipt when it was all signed and sealed. There was a queue behind me, so I decided to let it off and check the receipt at home. My own fault and I'm not that pushed, but I hate it when people try to pull the wool over our eyes. I think I'll go back and make a scene!! I want to keep the goods, but I'll demand the VAT is refunded. I've had great practice at bitch-acting from my insurance friends!
Killarney is ok. Outside the town is still beautiful. Dingle is really great, especially in the wilds. Feel free to go off the track away! :-)
Kav, I think you're right. I have done a bolshi jig before because the advertised price and the price demanded at the till were different - and I got my way! I think they have to let you have it for the price quoted.
I'm not shy about complaining, but sometimes I couldn't be bothered. This might be one of those times. We'll see! I really just wanted to warn others about it.
Mairéad,
A bit off topic but our tickets have been bought, the cottage rented, the turf stacked and the childer washed.
It's a good ways off yet but there are bloggy plans afoot.
Then again just wait for me and we'll go and make an absolute show in that shop.
