I see that a few "new revealations" have leaked out again today, showing Bertie in a less-than-honest light...
Let me just say: I don't belong to any political party. I don't vote along party lines / family tradition. I am a floating voter. I don't know WHO the hell I will vote for this time, but I will vote.
Back to Bertie Ahern.
Do you trust him?
I don't.
I can't believe the brass neck of the man. I can't stomach his flustering half truths. I am absolutely astonished that ANYONE bought his ol' tripe about the last bit of trouble he had. The people who saw a tear in his eye on the news, felt sorry for him and ripped into anyone who had a bad word to say about him, like er.. the opposition... (I thought that was their job?)
"The most devious of them all" - Charlie Haughey described Bertie Ahern thus! Mmmmm, well, that coming from Charlie, Bertie must be pretty damn devious then?!
Fianna Fáil lied through their teeth before the last election. Promised us the world and no additional taxation. Lies and damn lies.
I didn't believe them then.
I don't believe them now.
I definitely won't be voting for more nods, winks and lies for another five years!
Anyone else?
* For those outside Ireland:
Our Taoiseach (Prime Minister), Bertie Ahern, has called an election for the end of May. He has been caught out in many "uncertain" situations over the last many years. Some of those came to light earlier this year. Amazingly, Bertie's popularity grew - he cultivated and gained a lot of public sympathy. He has been caught out again today with a few more irregularities - e.g. cash was given to his life partner of the time. Was it a brown envelope (bribe)????

"Life partner of the time" Say's it all really doesn't it?
B-b-b-ertie? Trust? I wouldn't trust the little snake as far as I'd throw him, which would never be far enough.
Devin - :-) True!
FMC - good comparison! Many love him though! Imagine!!!
When you're politically in bed with America what can you expect other than the poor getting poored and the rich getting richer. Whatever about the election over there I really hope France elects the Socialist Segolene Royal and not Nicolas Sarkozy (right wing) for president. France is the only real big power in the world today standing up to the USA.
Of course I trust the man. Trust him to lie, cheat, finagle and generally carry on the long tradition of Fianna Fáil chicanery that made the great party what it is today.
Paddy, good point.
Liam g, quite!
I feel sorry for him...

Me too, anonymous - not!
Sorry, I couldn't get that link to work, but I searched for Bertie Ahern and found (after a couple of Ard Fheis bits - groan!) The Panel on about his "last bit of trouble" - Try:

I loved the bit where they talked about the ethics code (set up by none other than Bertie himself!!!) as Bertie shutting the door behind him!! Class.
Feckin crook.
But maybe we should forgive him, if only he wouldn't run for election again.
Yes Mr haughey said that he was the most devious but if you posted the complete quote you would see that he says
"The most skilful, the most devious, the most cunning of them all,"
Also his affairs in his private life are private, seperate from business so i dont believe you should judge his political career on personal events
You're not wrong, Bock.
You are though, Anonymous. I knew the full quote, it DOESN'T make Bertie sound any better! Worse if anything! Of course the way he conducts himself in his private life matters to me as a voter! If he's cunning, devious, economical with the truth, accepting "funny" money, telling half truths etc... etc... in his "private" life then why would he act differently in his public life?? Also, you are deluding yourself if you think his private life is separate from his public life - d'you really think he would even have been invited to Manchester, not to mind been given that loot, if he weren't a public figure? He is well dodgy and I do NOT trust him.
Mairead,
As a public figure he simply has to hold himself to a higher standard.Instead we get a bullying arrogance that just screams "I've got a lot to hide".
Sure the man has a right to a private life but any whiff of irregularity (and it's a lot more than a whiff) needs to be investigated and put to rest.If he has nothing to hide then where's the harm?
This man represents Ireland on the world stage.Could it be he does so more accurately than we're comfortable with.
You're right again, Devin. He has to be cleaner than clean or come clean, so to speak! I hope he doesn't represent us Irish anymore, but you make a very good point there.
I never expected much from him, no class, I always remember when Bill Clinton came to Ireland Bertie "Da teeshick" took him to a pub and a brewery!! Says it all.Could you expect the Prime Minister of any country to be accepting "digouts" from his friends and using it as a defence?? He is Shameless
At least Clinton for all his failings liked the better things in life Cigars etc!!!
